Flashing coil light start/stop error P164B

I should just say I completely forgot the oil filter location , it is of course neccessary to drop the oil!

Hi, watching this one with interest as my 2019 T28 has just started displaying the same fault. Same P164B00 code and symptoms. Mine started 2 weeks after an oil and filter change and its first 300+ mile long run towing in a year. I potentially made the mistake of fitting a cheapy GSF brand oil filter but I did use the reccommened Castrol oil.
Does anyone know if you have to drop the oil to remove the oil filter or can you take the filter it out for inspection without? Also any heads up on where the two oil sensors are located? - Thanks!!
Hi Andy. Sorry I can’t help with the location of switches. Nor would I know if the filter has caused the problem. I’m not that mechanically minded. Mine is due for a service in October so will hopefully investigate more then. Mine hasn’t even come up with a code yet but the light is starting to come on more frequently. Please keep us posted

I have done nothing with my as I wanted to monitor if there were any patterns to the light coming on and then investigate during my service it two weeks time. However the light has not come on for about a month now. I will just continue to monitor.

⚠️⚠️UPDATE⚠️⚠️
Eventually ended up in VW for this issue as nowhere managed to fix it, I had an engine mount broken and a damaged wire, this they thought fixed it, then it came back again, they checked the oil pressure switches again which were new, they then thought one of the switches was faulty, this worked, BUT ONLY FOR TWO MONTHS, then back to flashing coil light and loss of power, they now think the sump is gunked up and causing the oil pressure switch to stop working and causing the issue to return.
They now want to do an engine flush , take the sump off etc!!
So since about October last year I still have the issue, I hope this helps others if you have this problem!!
I’ll update again when it goes back in , in a couple of weeks!

Hi,

Can I ask what engine mount was broken? I think one of mine is broken as I get a clunk when moving on and off the accelerator

Hi P1les have you had an update with this issue? I have the same faults. Coincidentally I have had the issues since having my front engine mount replaced so hopefully it’s an issue with a damaged wire.

Hi, has anyone managed to rectify the issue? Mine started did the exact same thing, go over 3000rpm and comes flashing with stop start error. Turn engine on and off and resets. Had the van 6 week so it’s gutting. Has anyone changed the Battery? Haven’t had a look at error codes yet but will be today.
Thank you.

Update-my problem has now morphed and I no longer get flashing coil light but I now get an amber oil can warning and service message in the MFD at ignition on. VCDS shows that the oil sensor has lost contact with the gauges. So that’s what I’m going to focus on. Not sure if that helps anyone out.

So I have had the exact same issue, 2018 T6. Glowplug light comes on when engine cold above 2500rpm, turn off and on when warm it disappears. First garage replaced the oil pressure switch, that fixed it for 1 month then back on. Went to another specialist who diagnosed it to the oil pressure regulation valve. They said this valve closes a bit when warm but had jammed in position. He said this part had been superseded by VW, perhaps as they were a known fault. Reading this forum it seems like its around that age vehicle that gets the problem. They unfortunately fitted a faulty valve, and red oil light came on after 5 minutes of driving, returned to the garage and they rectified with a new part. All seems to be working fine again now, but only 1 week in. Will report again in 2 months. Thanks to Vee W services in Bristol for great customer service and professionalism in fixing this

Mine hasn’t done it in a while, had my checked with a diagnostic machine. Had a few errors but nothing major. Cleared them all and now seems fine. Drives perfect, just letting it fully warm up before I think about giving it some. But I drive like a granny so fingers crossed will be fine. Hope the issue has been sorted for yourself.

Also just had this in my 2018 T6 this evening. Turned off and on and it went away. I hope this isn't the start of major issues since I've only had the van a couple of months.

Mine hasn’t come on now for a few weeks. Had it checked and cleared on diagnostics machine. Luckily work next to a garage and they did this for free, he also has a T6.
He mentioned it can come on with allot of different problems. I have been on a few long runs and loads of short runs and mine hasn’t been on like I said. Hopefully mine has sorted it self. Hope you get your sorted. Like you only had my van weeks. It’s gutting when you seen lights flash up.

How we getting on another week later?

Collected my 2017 T6 T32 yesterday and it has the flashing coil. Read this thread with interest, particularly as mine also seemingly has a ‘stop/start’ fault. I assumed this was due to battery charge level as the van was stood for 6 months but perhaps they’re linked

Hi,
Mine has had that problem too. Think mine needs a new battery, mine is a daily runner so doesn’t come on often. I have also had the coil light flashing and gone into limp mode a couple of times. I had a fault and my local VW specialist told me it is probably the turbo actuator, I was booked in for the fault but he suggested turbo treatment as the can stick. Put some in and fault has gone. Had it re checked with plug in reader and no faults at all. So hopefully a £15 fix. Advised to use a testament every 5-6 tanks of fuel. Fingers crossed it’s now sorted. It’s gutting saving for a van and you see dreaded lights come on.

Check the wiring on top of the engine, I had the same issue and found that a wire going to a sensor on a water pipe had worn away, I fixed it and haven't had an issue since

A few pictures of my repair at the bottom of this thread

So mine seems to be the turbo Actuator, drives perfectly, but sometimes when you give it some the coil light flashes and goes into limp mode. Few people spoke to say it could be sticking.
I was at @Dav-Tec on Sat for a remap and limiter to be taken off, couldn’t get remap as fault was still there. Got advised to put some treatment in and give it a good drive, high revs. Hopefully this does it.
Dad had the same issue with his Ford Mondeo, he persisted with the treatment and spray and finally fixed the issue.

Will be back @Dav-Tec when the issue is fixed, if anyone needs a remap or help and around Chesterfield area I would highly recommend. Was absolutely spot on and very helpful.

I too have the dreaded flashing coil of doom, but mine is slightly different scenario.
I started to get a knocking from the DMF, but had to wait a month to get it fixed. Had it serviced in the meantime though. Local independent garages.
Had the Dmf, clutch fitted last week. All fine.
Coming back from work on the first day of use and the coil light comes on and loses power. Turn off and on and it clears and drives fine again except stop start error.
Go back to garage who did clutch and he clears the fault codes logged. Drives fine again for about 60 miles.
I have noticed that if I keep the revs up, it’s fine. If I go too slow in a gear and try to accelerate back up, that is when it throws the coil light. Ie
