Insurance is times as much as my car!!

Hi all

Still on the look out for a t6.1 but looking at insurance I'm getting between 1 and 2k insurance quotes!! Surely that's not the norm

I'm Struggling though as the vans I've seen are kitted up with alloys/body kit etc so struggling to find a proper value but that's the quotes I'm getting

Lots of info on insurance here;
My insurance is less than £350 a year fully comp and I know lots of other members are paying a lot less than £1,000 so your quotes are not the norm, however there are many variables such as your driving history and the area you live in.

Have Dave thanks for reply

No clean driving history and live in a quiet area

The issue is maybe how I'm describing the vehicle, the one I was Is a new t28150 dsg highline it's £50k (crazy prices now) but when it asked for value of the van do you put what's it worth standard (as its got kit alloys etc on) or what the value is paid ie £50k

another question was, is it a van? It's a 5 seater kombi so is that still classed as a van?

Kind regards

Van with windows I think but depends on how it’s registered if it’s a van van or an mpv van, I think all Kombis are van vans (with windows)

@Dpm0202 I have a 2021 6 seater van with windows, 20” alloys, leather interior, insulated and panelled out and bought from Salop Vans ready converted. I paid £41000 for it nearly 3 years ago and since had a Storm pop top fitted, lithium batteries etc. and now valued at £45000 with Brentacre insurance brokers. I have maximum no claims bonus and protected, my premium was £500. I only had the van 1 month and 700 miles on the clock when I had a accident with another vehicle and my fault the total cost was £6000 I was dreading my next quote but was surprised when it came in at £550 and this year it came in at £590 so Give Brentacre ins a try.

Hi mate thanks for the reply sounds like you've got a cracking deal with the costs vans now

That sounds reasonable compared to the quotes I was getting ha so thanks for that I will do that :)

Sounds like worth trying one of the specialist brokers where you can describe all changes.

a few of the more common ones:
Just Kampers
Adrian Flux
A-plan
Howdens

My van was 6seat factory kombi (van with windows). Now a fully converted 4seater camper. Poptop, full lithium system, rib bed.

Van bought for £41k valued at £62k.

Insured for £716, including agreed valuation. Just Kampers.

Specialist insurers are much better at this sort of thing. They see modified vehicles as a low risk as it's assumed that the owners have a passion for the vehicles and will take extra care of them. It's the same with classic cars. Your general providers get enough business through run of the mill policies, so have no reason to branch out.

Seems once again we in the UK are getting thoroughly ripped off. Claim pay outs up 18% yet average premiums up 34% and many EV and Range Rover owners are reporting 100% increases.
Meanwhile in France the average premium increase was 2%… and we’ve all seen how they park!;)

Must admit I haven’t tried them for a few years. First time I tried Aviva were quite a bit lower. Then moved on to LV who were cheapest after a couple of years. None of the camper people I tried got close to these two. I’ll see what fun awaits when I renew this year. I see road tax (as I still call it) is going up but I can understand that - well I understand the theory and don’t mind paying taxes when they are spent on us, rather than as bungs to mates).

Brentacre is a good shout and also try A plan now called Howdens, call the thatcham branch and get a quote that’s what I did and my insurance went from several hundred to around three hundred for a newish 6.1 with plenty of mods

Just had a quotation from Brentacre. £475 as opposed to the £700 that Admiral wanted on renewal.
Thank you for the tip.

I rang A-Plan (Howdens) two days ago. The camper bods were either still on their way back from lunch (at gone two pm) or we’re on other lines according to the home insurance guy that picked up the phone. He took my details though and promised someone will call back… still waiting.
Think I’ll skip them and try Brentacre next.
Comfort (Aviva) aren’t insuring in my postcode apparently!

It’s worth setting some time aside and ringing around. We were with Brentacre - we kept adding mods on which they said they had updated for us but they wouldn’t add to the agreed value… so when renewal came up with swapped to Adrian Flux who we have an agreed value with (the cost of the van and everything we have had done on top, body kit, air ride etc, they have the invoices for all the bits and agreed price). We also tried Howdens (was A-Plan).

Worth noting that through all 3 - it has always been the same insurance provider but just vastly different prices via the brokers.

Make sure you have a tracker fitted. Some won’t insure without and it may lower the price too
